Using Social Media to Promote YOUR Business
June 24, 2010
Ten years ago, the way society communicated was extraordinarily different than the way society communicates today. Teenagers, grandparents, media, and now businesses have turned to social networking to establish an online presence and expose themselves to a tech-savvy audience.
According to a study done by Google, 10 years ago, 18 million Google searches were conducted each day. That is 657 million Google searches a year. It is a rather large number, isn’t it? Well, according to this same study, in 2008, 2 BILLION Google searches were conducted each day. That is 700 billion in one year. In 2010, the amount of Google searches can only have increased since 2008, which encourages us to ask the question, “Is social media a fad, or a fundamental shift in the way we communicate?” According to Erik Qualman, who created the viral video Social Media Revolution, social media is not only a fundamental shift in the way we communicate, it is the biggest shift since the Industrial Revolution.

In a study conducted by Humber College students, 57% of people surveyed between the ages of 20 and 45 said they would first turn to the internet when searching for a business. Other options included word of mouth, a phone book, and print advertisements. Only 9% of people surveyed said they would first look in a phone book when trying to find a business. They were above the age of 60.
While Facebook (currently suggested as the world’s third largest ‘country’, ahead of the United States and behind China) is undoubtedly the leader in social networking applications presently, Twitter is not far behind. According to Twitter Chirp, Twitter has 105,779,710 registered users, with 300,000 new members registering each day. 37% of active Twitter users use their phone to tweet and receive updates, while 60% submit their ‘tweets’ from third party applications, many of which link ‘tweets’ to Facebook and Myspace statuses.
We encourage all of our members to create a Twitter account and promote your events and news to the masses. There is a whole new audience in the world of social media just waiting to be informed!
